Jesus and his disciples were on their way up to Jerusalem. The disciples were filled with fear and amazement and then Jesus began to explain what would happen to him at Jerusalem.

Hebrews 11 gave examples of faith and how this ought to effect the way we live. This letter was originally written to backward-lookingHebrew Christians in the first century. They were told that the Old Testament saints had not received the promise of being made perfect, not without the New Testament believers. The 'us' includes Christians today who are trusting in Jesus. As for the 'Great Cloud Of Witnesses'? Are these the Old Testament saints? No, I would say they are far too busy worshipping Jesus for this. The witness here is the testimony of the men and women of faith; what they achieved for God's glory.

Is being rich a blessing from the Lord and a sign of salvation? Not at all. It is hard, indeed naturally impossible for a rich man to be saved. But it is possible with God. Salvation is of grace.

We have seen a whole list of the faithful, now we come to the 'others'. Who were those others? We are not told their names, but we read here of those who were stoned to death. The Lord Jesus spoke of them as those who stoned the prophets. They had killed those who were sent to them. We read of Jeremiah being beaten, thrown into a pit and then rescued through the courage of one man.

Jesus pointed out a simple truth: when someone is performing miracles in his name, then that is evidence that he belongs to him. We know nothing about that man, except that he was casting out devils in Jesus' name. He would not have been doing this if he was in league with the devil. There is no suggestion that he was like Simon the sorcerer in Acts 8 who tried to buy the power.

As you read this list of men, perhaps you might think, but these men did things that do not speak of faith. However, we know that they were, because we are told so. Gideon laid out a fleece and asked for a sign, but he was a man of faith.
