The irony here, friends, is that it is knowing this, knowing that God is consuming fire, knowing who God is, that becomes a comfort because the awareness of his transcendence takes us to the cross, takes us to Jesus. Why? Well, because Christ is our refuge from the flood of God's wrath against, as Moses puts it, our iniquities, all our sins, public and private, all of which are wholly exposed before him, deserving of his wrath. And it points us to Christ because Christ comes to bear that judgement. He bore that wrath. He is chastised for sinners so that even we who have rejected God could fly safely, as it were, into him, hidden with Christ in God. This again is the point of verse one. God then becomes our dwelling place, our safety, our refuge in Jesus. Though our years pass away like a sigh, we do not fear the judgement because we live in light of this day. As Christ is our refuge, we are hidden in him. If we received him by faith, resting in Christ as he is offered to us in the gospel, perhaps you're not in him. You're here with us in this room. Let me urge you: this passage is a reminder, judging by Moses' words, we don't know how long we get in this vain passing life.
