Does "Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem" apply to Modern Israel?

Psalm 122:6 is one of the most frequently quoted verses in discussions about modern Israel. But is it a command for Christians today to pray for the modern nation of Israel, or does the New Testament reveal a greater fulfillment? In this study, we examine Psalm 122 in its original context and then allow the New Testament to interpret it. Looking at passages such as Hebrews 11–12, Galatians 4, Ephesians 2, and Romans 9–10, we ask an important question: What is the Jerusalem to which Christians now belong? This is not a criticism of the Jewish people. As Christians, we should love the Jewish people, pray for them, and long for them to come to faith in the Messiah. The issue is not whether we should pray for Jews, but how the New Testament teaches us to understand God's promises concerning Jerusalem and Israel. Ultimately, all God's promises find their fulfillment in the Lord Jesus Christ. He is the true Israel, and all who trust in Him—believing Jews and believing Gentiles alike—share together in the blessings of the New Covenant and belong to the heavenly Jerusalem.
