All of us have an innate sense of justice, albeit one that is corrupted by sin. While some of us applaud the sentence of a judge, some will think it too harsh and others that it is too lenient. We are all sinfully different. The Old Testament law says that the punishment should fit the crime. Those punishments were not about personal vengeance.

Before we consider the subject of divorce, it is important to understand what marriage is. God made man male and female and God instituted marriage. Biblical marriage is a permanent relationship between one man and one woman, which should only be brought to an end by death. In our world, all are in rebellion against God. This is our natural disposition. Psalm 2 speaks of the rulers of this world conspiring against the LORD and his Christ, seeking freedom from God's laws. We have seen national leaders pushing for same sex marriage; it was legalised in England in 2014 and now it is legal in the Isle of Man. The legacy of current world leaders is that of rebellion. We are to pray for our rulers, that they might repent from this rebellion. Marriage is a picture of the church: It points to the Lord Jesus Christ and it illustrates the relationship he has with his church.

But for God's grace, you could be the perpetrator of some of these terrible things happening in our world. The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked. Contrast your wickedness with the love, mercy and grace of God.

The Lord Jesus Christ declared clearly that he had come to fulfil the whole of the Scriptures, what we know of as the Old Testament. You need to remember this when you read the Old Testament.

The characteristics of the Christian are seen in the effects. Christian, you are the salt of the earth. Salt preserves and it slows down the rotting process. Are you one who notices the standards of decency being lowered and the first to speak up for holiness. Or if you spoke up, would you be seen as a hypocrite?
