We are all these things because of who Jesus is. This world is without peace, but to know Jesus is to know peace.

Surely there can be no greater incentive for heart purity than the prospect of seeing God. There is a sense in which we can see something of God now. The heavens declare the glory of God. But rebellious man will insist that there is no God, that everything came from a big bang. Now, Paul says that the wrath of God is revealed from heaven. The invisible attributes of God are clearly seen. You have no excuse for your insistance that there is no God.

Christians do descend into the pit of despair. We are exhorted to rejoice in the Lord always. But there is sin everywhere. It is a daily battle which sometimes leads to the depths of despair, a deep depression. Elijah was a prophet of God who prayed a prayer of despair. He asked the Lord to kill him. He must have been extremely miserable. There are many others in the Bible, including Hannah who was in bitterness of soul when her adversary provoked her severely. Read the Psalms of David and see the despondency that he experienced.

Jesus describes you, Christian friend, as blessed are the merciful and as receiving mercy. The Greek word translated here as merciful is only found here and in Hebrews 2:17, where Christ is described as "a merciful and faithful high priest". In the context this means actively compassionate. In all his life, he was merciful to outcasts. To some degree if you belong to Jesus, you should show something of his compassion.

When you got up this morning you probably had breakfast. Perhaps you were even peckish at the time. However, to hunger and to thirst is to have a strong desire. Think of the craving that a drug addict has. He will do anything for his next fix. This text is not talking about what this world offers. Righteous means a right standing before God. There is no one righteous no not one. We have all sinned and come short of the glory of God. The world is full of people who acknowledge that they are sinners, but instead of casting themselves on God's mercy they try to establish their own righteousness. This is what all religion outside of Christ is about.

As we continue to look at these blessings, we come to Mat 5:5 and look at meekness. Many think meekness means weakness. Well, if that is your understanding, it is not what the Lord Jesus Christ meant. Let me remind you that he described himself as meek and lowly in heart, but he was never weak.

This sermon was addressed to the disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ. It has a double purpose: to show what a true christian is; and secondly, how he should live. In fact most of the New Testament is for Christians. Many quote from the sermon on the mount but fail to realise this is only for those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of their sins. This behaviour is commendable in anyone. The fact is though that we do not live our lives like this. Jesus died because we do the wrong things in our lives. We do not love God with our whole being nor do we love our neighbour as ourselves. No one can commend himself before God and say that he tried very hard. It is essential that you trust in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Temptation, the Lord was tempted as we are, yet without sin. We are led astray by our own desires. We need to pray that we be kept from temptation.
