Peter wrote because of the danger of false prophets and teachers who seek to infiltrate the churches. Just as there was then, there are still people today who claim to be apostles and prophets. His desire was for his readers to remember and be established in the truth. The Holy Spirit has given us the whole of Scripture; we see much of it fulfilled in the life, death and resurrection of Christ, and we look for his appearing which is yet to be fulfilled.

In his second Epistle, Peter writes to people with like precious faith. It is a faith that has not been earned. Rather, it has been allotted to them by their God and Saviour Jesus Christ, who has bestowed to them all things that pertain unto life and godliness.

This is perhaps one of the most misunderstood passages in the Bible. For example someone I was talking to about Jesus quoted some verses from the Sermon on the Mount and made application to himself. But, the man was not a Christian. This sermon is specifically for his disciples. It is only people who are trusting Jesus for forgiveness from sin can address God as Father. Jesus is the one who gives those who trust in him the right, the privilege, to call God Father. This sermon shows what a true Christian is and how a true Christian should live.

Don't imagine that you have a sin that is too big for God to deal with. There is no sin too big or too small for God to forgive. However, God's word is very clear - he that believeth not is condemned already. It really is not a good thing for you to not believe that God sent his only begotten Son into the world to pay the price for your sin.

The very thought of continuing in sin, after being saved by the grace of God, is abhorrent. When the Lord Jesus Christ laid down his life on the cross he did so having lived a life of perfection.
