Grace Baptist
Church, Peel came into being as a direct result of the evangelistic outreach
of Grace Baptist Church Onchan.
The
relevant section states that it is the Church's responsibility to take the
Gospel to every person in the district, and to seek to establish Gospel
Churches wherever Christ is not preached.
In July 1973 the Onchan fellowship arranged
a Gospel Mission in Peel, a small fishing town on the west coast of the
Island. Interest was shown by quite a few of the local people, and as a result
regular Lord's Day evening services were commenced.
In January 1974 the new fellowship was formally constituted, and with the
blessing of the Onchan Church, Reverend Else moved from Onchan to Peel in
order to pastor the new flock.
Since its inception, the church has sought to take a firm and resolute stand
on a number of moral issues such as abortion and homosexuality, both of which
have been legalised in the IOM in the last two decades.
It has also raised a voice against blasphemous films and shows brought to the
Island.
Members and friends of the church have mounted public protests against
'Monty Python's Life of Brian', Jesus Christ Superstar', Godspell, and Billy
Connolly--because of his blasphemous 'Crucifixion' sketch.
Moreover, it has vigorously opposed the Ecumenical Movement and the Modern
Charismatic Movement. Because the church has 'nailed its colours to the mast'
in these areas, it has suffered some backlash and has been
attacked both in the local press and on local radio. More recently the church has got involved in the Isle of Man Euthanasia debate since 2003. |
