Very solemn words. Peter has warned of false teachers who would use deception to spread their heresies. Often they are very clever. They are self-willed and they walk after the flesh. Born again Christians are to walk after the Spirit and bring forth the fruit of the Spirit. The false teachers have no time for the word of God, thereby showing themselves to be the enemies of Christ.

Peter wrote because of the danger of false prophets and teachers who seek to infiltrate the churches. Just as there was then, there are still people today who claim to be apostles and prophets. His desire was for his readers to remember and be established in the truth. The Holy Spirit has given us the whole of Scripture; we see much of it fulfilled in the life, death and resurrection of Christ, and we look for his appearing which is yet to be fulfilled.
